I like to think of it this way:  "They" is "we."  That is, why wait for
"them" to establish standards when we can propose something for them to
start chewing on?

No contradiction at all.  One can standardise naming conventions (must pass
US spelling rules <grin>) or indentation, white space and so on.  Check out
the Java naming conventions for one view on how to approach these things.
Also, 'Code Complete' by Steve McConnell has some suggestions.
