My general breakdown goes like this: If you need fast response time, or the same static access is used more than a dozen times a shift, build the logical. If it's an infrequently used access path and is for a report, I'll use OPNQRYF. The exceptions to this occur when somebody wants a dynamic select/omit and ordering for an interactive job. Then I'll use OPNQRYF AND build a logical. If the file isn't keyed then you'll have to create a format file that is, so the RPG program will recognise the key you'll build at runtime with OPNQRYF. --buck
