I must be missing something - the fact that so many are going to be using this, should not have an impact on the number you create. It could be a dataarea or a one record file, either way, lock the dataarea/record for only a few lines of code, just long enough to get the number, increment, and update. If the objects are built with 60 second wait times, this should never ab-end the program(s), as each program will only have control of the "record" for a mille-second. If you fear you will have over 3,600 people pressing enter at the same time - bump up the wait time on the object, and "let the user know" they are in a "Q" to get the next available tracking number. I need to assign a number or something to each record so I can reference them. What is the best way to do this ? At a past company we had multiple companies and I wrote Receiving programs that generated a Receiver # from a data area and each company had a particular designation in that data area plus the "next number". This, plus the fact that usually only one person at a location would be entering Receivers, tended to avoid any problems with this. In this situation, with the option of being anonymous it is wide open to all our 10 locations; I fear this might be more difficult. Anyone doing anything like this ? Thanks !
