You can use UUID's by searching the archives for this. If you are on V5R2, you can use identity columns http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r2/ic2924/info/sqlp/rbafymst79.htm or ROWID's http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r2/ic2924/info/sqlp/rbafymst80.htm both are quite simple to set up and would require ZERO PROGRAMMING on your part to increment. After having asked a recent question on either this list, or the midrange-l list, about some manipulation of a combined field, (like your example of differentiating by plant) I've come to the conclusion that this violates database rules. And I keep the fields separate. When I need them combined I use a view that combines them. I need to assign a number or something to each record so I can reference them. What is the best way to do this ? At a past company we had multiple companies and I wrote Receiving programs that generated a Receiver # from a data area and each company had a particular designation in that data area plus the "next number". This, plus the fact that usually only one person at a location would be entering Receivers, tended to avoid any problems with this. In this situation, with the option of being anonymous it is wide open to all our 10 locations; I fear this might be more difficult. Anyone doing anything like this ? Thanks !
