If you > mean wholesale conversion to RPG IV, then I agree this is trivial. As you state later, this is indeed what I'm saying - mass conversion to RPG IV. ILE does not REQUIRE service programs, it merely makes them available. And while a true mvoe to ILE is a long, involved process, the move to RPG IV is relatively painless and reduces the AG issues. > > >I just did an ICT PollCast, and of 30 responders, > >only 5 said they had an even mix of ILE and RPG. > >17 were ILE or mostly ILE, while 3 were mostly OPM. > >1 poor soul was pure OPM. Doesn't that support the idea that the mixed environment really > is more common than the full monty? No, 9 are full ILE, 8 mostly ILE. Since this is a statistically insignificant sampling, I didn't bother to ask more penetrating questions (such as why do the "mostly ILE" folks have ANY OPM programs) but my bet is a few vendor programs without source, eh? (Another poll, and by far the majority voted for "no source". Of the three responses not related to source, two were policy and one was RPG III copy books. That last issue could be a problem.) > This isn't _really_ ILE, inasmuch as much an exercise to move toward it, > right? I mean, after we're done, we haven't got any service > programs. But > we're in a position to allow service programs, because everybody > is *CALLER > now. Interesting. If you can get break ILE and service programs apart, and make them simply steps in a continuum, I think you'll see that the move to ILE (or perhaps RPG IV is more apt) really has a definite advantage. > Got it. But there are a bunch of folks who are just starting to get into > RPG IV and want to dabble with ILE. What advice do we give these > folks, in > the mixed-mode interoperability world? Folks who may be working > with vendor > software, perhaps? Mixed-mode is bad. There's no other way to say it. If your vendor won't take the freaking time to run CVTRPGSRC on their source, then you might want to consider another vendor. What's the chance of these shmucks giving you any other technological advances when they can't even do something as simple as this? Or how about this: don't bother with service programs until you've taken the prerequisite step of converting to RPG IV. Otherwise it's like putting a hemi in a Gremlin. It COULD work, but you're looking for trouble... Joe
