The problem with relying on the evaluation sequence of the IF is that someone else may change it later - it is a likely change to be made by an efficiency fiend since the firsttime test will only ever give true once so why not have it last? A better answer I think is to simply change the definition of the line number to be type I or U. It won't cause any problems, will be more efficient, and won't cause this error. The reason the old IFxx test works I suspect is that like fixed form math operations, it simply truncates the excess digits and ignores them. Jon Paris Partner400
