Tracy, Are you trying to create/fill a database file or a PC stream file? If it's a database file, it doesn't have to be externally described. Rob's method is probably the easiest way to go. But if your desired end result is a CSV file for a PC (which seems likely, but may not be the case), just go straight for the stream file option and cut out a step. I just did it with CRTPF ... RCDLEN(...) and no DDS. Rob Berendt -- "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." However, in just trying to do the command for a temporary file, I get an error saying my TOFILE is not the right file type. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of a temporary file, if the file has to be an existing externally described file? And yes, this may seem like a basic question, and no doubt I could become an expert if I take more time to research this, however, I can think of immediate uses for this, and I was wanting to test this right away! -Tracy Ext. 3107 -----Original Message----- From: Haas, Matt [mailto:Matt.Haas@thomsonlearning.com] Sent: Thursday, November 21, 2002 2:23 PM To: rpg400-l@midrange.com Subject: RE: Assign a Value Bill, An easier way to get a file with comma separated values to create a temporary file with the data and use the CPYTOIMPF command. For example I have a client which requires us to seperate our fields by commas. I would like to code this in the DDS rather than in my pgm-there are over 120 fields. I would use the values keyword but I think this just allows certain values-not assign. Thanks _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses.
