I use a lot of triggers in my transaction processing, and find pointers invaluable. So it is not only "system level" processing which benefit by judicious use of them.
I haven't found a reasonable way other than using a pointer to be able to access two difference occurrences of a MODS simultaneously; where I am actually accessing the real data, not a copy.
