In my opinion, performance is the big reason, and parameter type checking is the secondary one, with the ability to embed a procedure call within an expression coming in third - like eval custName = getName(custID). I bet that other folks would put these in a different order, not to mention coming up with reasons that I didn't think to include. --buck
