Right.  I suspect that the CHAIN and fail test is not happening, but the
Z-ADD line is.  This is very typically a first cycle sort of issue.  Is it
possible that there is a first cycle that can try to reference the array
(possible elsewhere in the code) before the first CHAIN occurs?

Numeric subfields, numeric initialisation.  It's in the RPG Reference
manual.  I don't have the RPG/400 ref handy, but it's there.
