Can you use the ALIAS of a field in a physical file in RPG yet? I also
noticed there was a similar concept with external data structures on the
2002 RPG Voting Ballot, so maybe that answers my question:-)
No, the RPG IV compiler does not have support for ALIAS names. (The
request has already been noted and recorded.)

#20 $10 ALIAS name support for data structures. Alias name is used
instead of regular name for subfields of externally
            described data structures.
            Example:
              D struct E DS EXTNAME(file:rec:*ALIAS)

My next question would be does the RPG compiler team have an update for us
as to what new features are going to be added to RPG in it's next release?
No. But I'm sure details will be offered closer to the GA date. As
I've mentioned before, RPG IV content in the next release will be
more modest in comparison to previous releases, since one of the
compiler developers (me) will be taking a few months off on a
"parental" leave of absence.

When will the next release be coming out?
GA will be some amount of time following the official announcement.
(No, I don't know when that date is!)

Cheers! Hans
