A variable defined within a procedure is known only to that procedure.  If
it has the same name as a variable defined globally, then the local variable
is used during the procedure instead of the global one.  Global variables
are global only within the module they are defined in unless EXPORT is
specified.  A better way may be to pass the record to P1 as a data
structure.
