Hans,
The only reason I have for avoiding %editw is for future maintenance.  The data 
stucture is used in a flat file for data exchange
with a bussiness partner.  They control the standard and if they ever wanted to 
change that stucture, which happens from time to
time, %editc would make maintenance both easier and less error prone.

I do like the %xlate solution.
