Tom, >but Joe isn't asking to use new %bifs nor to use new features that >need new run-time routines nor new machine instructions. I don't know that is a given. The example he quoted was to be able to use the new V5R2 ability to list mulitple fields or expressions on a chain operation in lieu of a keylist name. Does this compile into exactly the same w-code as when a keylist name is used? Or is there a RPG runtime routine called? I don't know; I don't have V5R2 installed yet. >It's almost as if you're saying that the actual V4R4 compiler will be used ... > >Oh... wait... Never mind. :-) Although you are tongue in cheek, I suspect lots of people still don't realize this is how target release is implemented in the HLL compilers. Once you realize that, it is easy to understand why you can't use features in the newer compiler. Unless IBM PTF's them back to the old compiler. Doug
