Booth: For some practical experience, you can try ObjectREXX. I used to see free downloads available here and there; not sure if any still exist. (Hmmm... Alphaworks, maybe?) If you already know some REXX, this allows some transition into OO thinking. With NetREXX, you can even use Java classes if you want more direct practice. IBM sells a decent visual ObjectREXX for Windows that's got a built-in tutorial for $50 or so for the personal edition. It's actually not bad. I've thought ObjectREXX should be the default REXX on AS/400s. (A REXX compiler would also be nice.) Books are great for reference, but it's hard to beat actual programming to make concepts come alive. If a direct jump to Java (or C++ or...) is too long a leap due to time or other constraints, ObjectREXX is an alternative.
