Buck,

Thought of that, but I was already passing a parm to the program to tell me
which file i was updating.  I just did a quick if/else on all the i/o for
that file and went on.  thanks for the help though

Hrm.  How about program describe it (wait, wait!) but use an externally
described data structure to map the input fields.  You can use the DS for
all the I/O...  All the benefits of external but no reference to the record
format.  You can even make the record length too big and it won't complain.
