The RPG cycle is not another "language", it is a facility that has resided
at the core of the RPG family of languages. In my humble opinion, I look
upon the cycle as merely a "tool" amongst others that RPG provides in order
to solve problems. Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't. As Dan pointed
out it only takes barely 15 minutes to master the concept of the cycle and
it does provide quick and clean code when reading a file and running
sub-totals. Sometimes I use a hammer, sometimes I use a nail-gun. It's
just another simple to use tool in my workshop.
Most programmers I know that don't like the cycle are those that came from
another language. You know, the same folks that say "FORTRAN is better than
RPG", "COBOL is better than FORTRAN", "PC's are better than AS400's",
"Microsoft is better than IBM", "Cheddar cheese is better than Swiss", those
kind of silly, yet wonderful and wacky folks.

Jeff, I didn't say I didn't understand it. But just because I understand it
does that mean I must use it. We have several people here who love to do
things in REXX. Great language for some things, however when they start to
code things that way and expect the other 20 or 30 programmers to understand
what it does is that necessarily a good way to code. Not everyone here
knows REXX as many of the other languages or details in those languages. I
know COBOL also, but when a program in 36 COBOL comes along I will do my
darndest to let someone else make the changes.

I was going to reply just as smart-alecky as you did, but decided
against it. If you didn't read Doug's entire post and get it, you
wouldn't get this either. Rob Berendt replied better anyway.

Doug's whole point was just because it's been around for years and years
doesn't mean it isn't valuable. It's been pointed out many times on
various lists just how old Unix is.
