" I can write the same code myself which will immediately be understandable to any other competent RPG programmer" IMHO, I agree with the expression: "...my point *is not* that I'm saving a few lines of coding. My point *is* that I'm saving time, in both the coding and testing." I think that if I use 5 lines of code to accomplish effectively a task (maybe using classic operation codes) and then 25 lines to do the same task but "differently", I think that I was more "effective" and "technically competent" with the selection of the previous 5-lines code. Not because the code is using the classic RPG cycle can be labeled as "old fashion". In addition to this point, the concept of being "competent" is a matter of perception as well. Maybe a definition of a file as PRIMARY is more effective is certain situations but the definition of FULL PROCEDURAL is better in others. The way you see the final solution and how you want to do an effective test/debug of the program will generate the way the program is developed and I think that everybody (experts and rookies like me) will "create" an effective and professional solution.
