Maybe it is a misunderstanding. The way the GPL is worded, it seems like the
whole application has to be open source, but isn't it just that module and
any modifications to that module?

I don't understand why you cannot use GPL software. Does
that mean you cannot use the Apache web server, Eclipse,
or the Qshell utilities?
