IMHO I would not code it this way - I find it easier to read if coded like
this;
besides your two examples will not give the same results.

       if     (This = 'Thing'       and
               that = 'That')           OR
              (this = 'Otherthing'  and
               that = 'That')

               doyour stuff

       endIF

redundant or not is still a style argument, I find it much easier to read
and in the long run, if you can SEE what is going on quickly, I feel that
is much more important that having the fewest lines of code (memory is cheap
and so is DASD now)

You could code it like the following, but I feel it is harder to read (opion
only)

      if     (that = 'That')        AND
             (this = 'Otherthing'  OR
              this = 'Thing')

               doyour stuff

       endIF

Subject: Boolean expressions

Being new to the as400 programming world, I would like some insight of how
RPG deals with expressions such as

this   ifeq           'Thing'
that   andeq     'That'

this    oreq        'Otherthing'
that    andeq    'That'

            do this

endif

Isn't it redundant and if so equivalent of:

this    ifeq        'Thing'
this    oreq      'otherthing'
that    andeq  'that'

     do this
end if

How does RPG evaluate boolean expressions?

I've had some argumentation about this and do not agree with my superior on
this.
Thanks in advance.

Francois Cinq
