Bob, I was just about to recommend the same thing when I read your post. Since there is a large number of files, one could have a wrapper program that performs a DSPFFD to an outfile, a program that uses this to create a non keyed logical DDS of just the alpha fields and compiles the LF, a program that writes the necessary RPG code on the fly for the file being processed and compiles it then runs the RPG program. It could make a nice one day project to write this tool. Follow that up with trigger programs for each file to prevent the character from ever getting into the file and your done.
