The answer depends on what you want to do after you scan. If you simply want to know if the data contains an asterisk, then you could use CPYF with its simple selection criteria and copy the results to either a new database file or *PRINT. If you want to change the data, then you need a generalized scanning tool for your character fields. Searching is pretty simply, using QCLSCAN or CPYF or SQL can give you results for any file, but knowing the field names and only searching in those fields is a bit more complex. If, for example, the field name being searched was/is the same in all 500 files, then it I would use: (a) SQL if a change is required once the data is detected. (b) CPYF or OPNQRYF if you only need to read the data (c) An RPG program with embedded SQL that is in a loop which is performed once for each file.
