You're correct. You can do that. There's no arguing that. But with a subprocedure you gain speed, ease of use, and are able to group your procedures into "libraries" or service programs. Also, Calling a program you cannot return a value and simulate a BIF as you can with subprocedures, which makes code much more readable.
