Hello Gary,

My comments about the complexities of ILE were not specifically about
overrides, but about ILE in general. And I did not mean to imply that
programmers knew and understood everything about overrides in OPM; what I
meant was that most programmers were able to use them without fully
understanding all the technical details.

When we (Pantheon Automatisering - a software company in Holland) recruit
new programmers, we seldom hire people with RPG experience. We primary look
for people with knowledge of and ability to understand business problems.
They get a short training in RPG, DDS, CL and, last but not least, our set
of template programs.

Most of our programmers have a firm grasp of business problems and are very
capable of solving our clients' problems. Only a few of our programmers
have more than a working knowledge of RPG; they are the ones that create and
maintain the template programs and the ones that help the others when they
struggle with technical problems.

For people like you (I presume) and me, who like to know all the technical
details and have a dislike of things they don't fully understand, ILE makes
life more interesting. For people to whom RPG is just a tool to get the job
done and don't really care whether it is in RPG III or IV, ILE just adds
complexity.

Anyway, rest assured that I'll read your article with interest and that I'll
give you feedback on it.

Joep Beckeringh
