An example of input would help.  Are you getting fixed length text files?
comma separated variable (CSV), tab delimited, or...

Each one requires a little different parser.  For a parser is what you are
going to have to write if you are going to do this yourself.  And since you
don't have a definite standard (since they're not doing the same thing) you'll
have to expect the unexpected.  A number they could send as;
'     12345'
'0000012345'
'12345     '
'12345'

So, your program is going to have to interpret those to a valid number.  I 
believe
the C call CTOI (Character to Integer) would handle all of those with no 
problems.
CTOF (Character to Float) would handle decimal data.

Without any more info to go on, not much I can answer.
