Dave: You've never tried %CHAR, have you? %CHAR performs roughly
the same function as %TRIML(%EDITC(number:'P')). The edit code
gives you leading blanks instead of zeros and the trim will strip
them off. For example if P(15,6) field X has value 123.45, the
character expression "'/'+%CHAR(X)+'/'" gives the value "/123.45/".

(BTW, in the oft-rumored V5R1 release, it is suspected that %CHAR
will also perform more robust conversions from date, time, and
timestamp types to character. You'll be able to specify a format
as the second parameter.)

Cheers! Hans
