When the lead developer of the RPG IV compiler says that %CHAR will do the
job you can usually rely on the answer Dave <grin>

%Char strips off the leading and trailing blanks and leaves you only with
the significant digits.

If I recall correctly it is roughly equivalent to %Trim(%Char ( Value : 'I'
: *CurSym )
