Character to Numeric -- RPG400-L

I am receiving a character field from another system
that will contain a number with decimal. The number
could be right justified, left justified or have
spaces on either side of it in the field.

Does anyone have any suggestions for converting the
character field number to a numeric field?

Any help is appreciated,
