Depends on how sure you'll be receiving valid numeric characters, where the
sign will be, and whether or not there'll be thousands separators.  

If you're absolutely sure it will always be a positive number with no sign
character and no separators, you're home free.  Trim the character field and
move the result of the trim to a numeric.  

If you have to deal with signs and separators and uncertainty about the
values of the individual characters, you'll need to write your own code to
deal with all of the conditions you expect to see.  Check the archives.
Earlier this year there was a pretty extensive thread on this sort of
conversion with several different coding approaches posted.  This sort of
thing isn't hard, it just involves careful thinking about the exceptions
you'll encounter and how you want to deal with them.  It's definitely a
write it once and use it over and over situation.
