Yeah, I posted my response before Scott's showed up at my end. :( Still, this falls under the category of stuff we can handle relatively easily with a service program. Just create your own BITxxx procedures with numerous arguments coded as CONST and *NOPASS. In the routine just use %parms to determine how many times to use the MI builtins to aggregate your return value. I'm *not* against the BIFs -- it would standardize how everybody does it and arguably make it more "mainstream" if it were documented in the RPG manual instead of relying on MI builtins. But as a general rule, I don't mind using service programs. Follow on programmers don't have to be able to code the service program -- they just have to understand how and why to call or use the "black box" routines. Documentation can provide this.
