Brad mentioned code reuse, but the biggest benefit for me far and away was
improved readability.  I can use truly meaningful variable names instead of
6 character ABRVTS (abbreviations).

Other benefits (for an old RPG II programmer):
1) Fewer limitations (larger arrays, character strings, etc.)
2) Local storage via subprocedures
