CONSISTENCY. By placing a common routine in a service program instead of coding it in multiple programs, you know your code will act the same no matter what program uses it. This is a benefit to both the programmer and the end user. There are other reasons but those are the ones that leap to the fore. So far as the ILE part... well that is still a dark mystery to me. _______________________ Booth Martin Booth@MartinVT.com http://www.MartinVT.com _______________________ Buck Calabro <buck.calabro@aptissoftware.com> Sent by: owner-rpg400-l@midrange.com 10/23/2000 12:15 PM Please respond to RPG400-L To: rpg400-l@midrange.com cc: Subject: RE: What are the Benefits of ILE? Brad mentioned code reuse, but the biggest benefit for me far and away was improved readability. I can use truly meaningful variable names instead of 6 character ABRVTS (abbreviations). Other benefits (for an old RPG II programmer): 1) Fewer limitations (larger arrays, character strings, etc.) 2) Local storage via subprocedures Buck Calabro Aptis; Albany, NY "We are what we repeatedly do.
