I think we're agreeing here, but (as usual) my postings aren't clear enough. Here's an example of what I meant when I said that SQL "masks" the value: (all columns are null capable and default to null) INSERT INTO BUCK/BUCK1 (BREAKLVL) VALUES('x') select * from buck1 (shows me "x" and dashes for the null columns) UPDATE BUCK/BUCK1 SET HRHXCD = 'y' WHERE breaklvl='x' select * from buck1 (shows me the "y" in this column) UPDATE BUCK/BUCK1 SET HRHXCD = NULL WHERE breaklvl='x' select * from buck1 (shows the dash for this column even though it does have a value) Buck Calabro Aptis; Albany, NY "We are what we repeatedly do.
