yes. unfortunately, the next IO operation is not preceded by a CHAIN, is in another program and uses another ODP. The positioning explained in your note only applies to the next IO to the same ODP, only when preceded by a CHAIN, and in my experience WRITE or INSERT do not leave the cursor pointing to a defined place. "When the CHAIN operation is successful, the file specified in factor 2 is positioned such that a subsequent read operation retrieves the record logically following or preceding the retrieved record. When the CHAIN operation is not completed successfully (for example, an error occurs or no record is found), the file specified in factor 2 must be repositioned (for example, by a CHAIN or SETLL operation) before a subsequent read operation can be done on that file.If an update (on the calculation or output specifications) is done on the file specified in factor 2 immediately after a successful CHAIN operation to that file, the last record retrieved is updated." -DaveK > Small problem, is this the answer? > > Program A, writes a record to the order detail file using logical LL0001LA. > Program A, then immediately calls program B, which is passed the order number to recalculate the total order amount in the detail file to update the order header file. Program B uses a different logical, LL0001LB, over the order detail file. Program B, does a CHAIN to the first record for the order, then a subsequent READE until end of order. > > QUESTION???
