Dean, >but have never had a client using CODE. Hence my unused >tool argument. I guess I don't see the problem in using CODE to edit source even if the in-house staff doesn't. If you're brought in specifically for training, I can see your point. I was thinking of an IC doing development as opposed to training. In this context, I don't see that the client should discourage an IC from using a different editor if it felt it made them more productive. It could well be our diverse outlooks on what we typically do for clients has hindered our abilities to see the other's viewpoint. >Yes, but to purchase a box with all of the tools I need is cost-prohibitive. >ADTS, Performance Tools, Languages, SQL, etc. These things add up, The P05 tier isn't too bad. Granted, I do only have the RPG compiler. I figure if I really need the C compiler for something I'll get a timeshare account, or use the 70-day trial grace period. However, I find that just having access to the C library and MI builtins from my RPG code has mostly eliminated my desire for a C compiler. YMMV. Many machines now come bundled with SQL, Query, and CA along with the OS. At the P05 level it is doable, even for a one-man shop like me. Of course, if they offer us a Visual Studio-like bundle soon at a very attractive price, that is better yet. Also, the PID plans get you the software at a greatly reduced price, if you meet the guidelines for joining PID. I couldn't commit to them at the time, so I just purchased a regular box directly from a VAR. >especially if you're planning to stay current on the OS. Software subscription is only $40/mth or so for P05. >I wouldn't feel >comfortable advising on LPAR or SMP if I didn't have a machine of my own that >would handle those options. Granted, the P05 machines are single processor so won't do LPAR or SMP, at least in V4. The webcast made it sound to me (unless I misunderstood it) that next year we can plan on LPAR even on single processors, and have different OS releases in different partitions. However, I don't think having LPAR on a personal machine would do much for real world exposure to using it. The job mix just isn't there. Or at least it isn't at my house ... Aside from going through the motions of how it is done, I don't see it as a viable means to get experience in analysing performance data. >I see. But using that editor at client sites can be a problem. Most of my >consulting involves training client developers on new methodologies -- can't >do that if we're not using the same editor... Maybe you need to train them on a new editor. <g> Works for Jon!
