I agree with you - using it just because it's GUI isn't the right reason to go to it. The right reason to go to it is because it can do things that make a programmer more productive - and in my opinion both CODE and Flex/Edit do. I could go through a whole host of things that I find more productive about them, but I can't make a convincing case without actually showing them to you, which is a bit hard to do via e-mail. Note that the original version of Flex/Edit was NOT a GUI app, but a text-based DOS (and OS/2!) application. I used it and loved it, it was a HUGE improvement over SEU for me. In fact, there are a few things I like about that editor that the current Windows crop haven't really matched yet, many years later. As for the "prohibitive" cost, I guess that's a perspective issue.
