John, One strange thing is that you can't specify %len(fld) = *ZERO, you must specify %len(fld) = 0. When I first saw this I thought it was such an obvious error that I didn't bother reporting it. I guess it wasn't that obvious because it has been this way for quite a while. David Morris Wrong, It can assign a value with VARYING length fields, C EVAL %LEN(VARYING_FLD) = 5 A couple of other string handling BIF's like %SUBST, %REPLACE I think can also be assigned(on the left side of = sign).
