Something that seems to be blocking the development of such a framework is the lack of a good build utility. As I develop with ILE (which is great to have) I am frustrated that there isn't a build utility like make. I have various modules and service programs that may or may not need to be recompiled. I may need to check that required software is installed (like autoconf does). I need a *simple* way to list dependencies. It is simple to type 'make' and then 'make install'. As far as I can tell no such thing exists for the AS/400. This is important when you are building a framework on which to base other projects. If I want to make a collecton of modules that can be reused by any developer that developer needs to be able to check that everything needed is installed and then compile and link with potentially a huge numbers of smaller pieces. In the RPG III days everything was in one program (maybe some DDS and a CL program to go with it), so you didn't really need a make program. Now with programming done better in smaller modules that are reusable we need make to help stick everything together. Maybe there is a make utility that I am not aware of? At least there is nothing that is included with the RPG compiler.
