Are you sure that the "1" and the "8" are different wide? When i select
Arial and write 1111111111 in one row and in the one underneath 8888888888,
they have the same length. (Digits have the same width, normally. There are
exceptions from the rule, of course.)

I think that the blanks are your problem. "bbbbb1" and "888888" will lead to
a 1 standing much too far left. If this is the case, try to insert the font
changing sequence just before the first digit and leave the blanks in a
fixed space font.

If you have now just inserted the font change at the beginning of the data
stream, this is much work.
Then follow the advice and use a fixed space font.
