Actually, OVERLAY is used in data structures. The syntax is overlay(field : offset) where offset is the position in the field to be overlaid where you want the overlay to start. If the overlay starts in the first position of the field, you don't have to specify the offset. You can overlay at an offset in a named data structure, (but not an anonymous one) or any field in a data structure. If you use overlay, you don't have to specify explicit beginning and end offsets for fields that overlay other fields, and it's easier to understand which field is which in a data structure definition. > -----Original Message----- > From: Bruce Collins [mailto:bacollins@twitchellcorp.com] > Sent: Tuesday, April 04, 2000 7:19 AM > To: RPG400-L@midrange.com > Subject: Overlay Keyword > > > I have a question using the "overlay" keyword. > > If I have two field each 4 alpha i.e. MMDD and YEAR and I > want to combine > them to look like YEARMMDD which is 8 alpha. How would I use > the overlay > keyword to accomplish this.
