you don't (smart answer)

Overlay allows you to have multiple record formats on the screen at the same
time (fields cannot be
on the same line if on a different format tho')

Best way is to define either an 8digit numeric or a proper date field on the
screen and set it
up in your program.
You could do a (no comments pls)
                                          MOVEL YEAR
EIGHTDIGDATE
                                          MOVE MMDD
EIGHTDIGDATE

Subject: Overlay Keyword

I have a question using the "overlay" keyword.

If I have two field each 4 alpha i.e. MMDD and YEAR and I want to combine
them to look like YEARMMDD which is 8 alpha. How would I use the overlay
keyword to accomplish this. I know you can use a data structure or the cat
function to do this but I was trying to learn new stuff. TIA
