My understanding of the cycle is that it was introduced to help transfer skilled punchcard people to the magnetic storage methods of the modern computer. I've always liked the cycle because it is a rock in a sea of change, but I suspect it's copying of the punchcard processing method doomed its flexibility. Remember, with punch cards you couldn't fill in the punched holes, you couldn't start processing a card deck at any point except the beginning, and you could only read forwards through the file, once. Random use of the data was not a reasonable expectation, even on the tape reels that came after the cards. For raw data processing in a hurry it is still awesome though. Its a great feature if its in your tool kit, but if it isn't in your tool kit don't bother. _______________________ Booth Martin boothm@earth.goddard.edu http://www.spy.net/~booth _______________________ RICK_A_PEZZIMENTI.NDOA@notes.denso.co.jp Sent by: owner-rpg400-l@midrange.com 02/15/2000 05:43 PM Please respond to RPG400-L To: RPG400-L@midrange.com cc: Subject: Re: RPG Cycle I was introduced to RPG back in 98 also, and whilst i was told about the cycle, i was told to aviod it unless you were intending to process all records in a file. Even still, i would prefer to *see* what is happening in my code. One instructor told me that the only reason it is still there is for backwards compatability, is this true? I am not sure. I guess it's a case of each to their own, but i have worked with about 6 or 7 contractors and they all seem to steer well clear of the cycle. I got my programming degree in 98 and I never heard a word about a RPG cycle in school. I now have gotten a new manager, who comes from a RPG II background and thinks wonders of the cycle. Also if anyone has any or can point me to info on the cycle. Thanks for all your guys (and gals) input, I have learned more from this list than all my RPG classes. +--- | This is the RPG/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to RPG400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to RPG400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to RPG400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- +--- | This is the RPG/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to RPG400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to RPG400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to RPG400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
