Well thanks to all who had ideas. I just used a couple of them. I just adjusted it to search for the most stringent search first, and took the K out of the F spec. and brought the time down from 4 hours to 20 minutes. Thanks for all your expertise >>> chayden@ORIENTAL.COM 02/07/00 07:34AM >>> is there a logical that is keyed by the criteria you need? if there is a key that can be used, why wouldn't you use SETLL? try the OPNQRYF command with OVRDBF SHARE(*YES) "Chris Beck" <CBeck@good-sam.com> on 02/04/2000 03:43:02 PM Please respond to RPG400-L@midrange.com To: RPG400-L@midrange.com cc: (bcc: Chris Hayden/OTC) Subject: Changeing records in a big file I have a 4 million record file that I need to change some records in if they meet certain criteria. What are some things I can do to speed this up. obviously sequential reading of the file is out of the question at over 4 hours to run. I would prefer not to use the SETLL if possible, because I don't want to have to go in to the file and see what record to start with. thanks for any help. +--- | This is the RPG/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to RPG400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to RPG400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to RPG400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- +--- | This is the RPG/400 Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to RPG400-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to RPG400-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to RPG400-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
