I would use SQLRPGLE to do it. I think even without a key, SQL can scream
thru the file doing a Full Data Base scan of all the records in a LOT less
time than reading a record in to an RPG program for Update(syncronious
brings) and then deciding you don't need to update that record. If you
have an index that could possibly be used, SQL will find it.

Here's a tip, write an SQLRPG program to do the update, compile it
against the real file, then do a PRTSQLINF (print SQL info) on the program,
The printout will tell you what access method the SQL thinks it will use and
the estimated time it would take to run.

---------------------------------
I have a 4 million record file that I need to change some records in if they
meet certain criteria. What are some things I can do to speed this up.
obviously sequential reading of the file is out of the question at over 4
hours to run. I would prefer not to use the SETLL if possible, because I
don't want to have to go in to the file and see what record to start with.

thanks for any help.
