Chris, on thing I've done with good results is to make the most stringent
search first. Lets say you wanted all People who's name started with "A",
were born in 1963, and were male. Do the check for 1963 first, then for
"A", then for Male. Also, be sure there is no "K" on the F-spec line.
Sequential reading of a 4,000,000 record file shouldn't take 4 hours if
you read in arrival sequence.

Subject: Changeing records in a big file

I have a 4 million record file that I need to change some records in if
they meet certain criteria. What are some things I can do to speed this
up. obviously sequential reading of the file is out of the question at
over 4 hours to run. I would prefer not to use the SETLL if possible,
because I don't want to have to go in to the file and see what record to
start with.

thanks for any help.
