If memory serves, date fields are initialized to *loval.  Nullity (ooh, I
thought I'd never use that word in polite conversation), I think, is an
attribute of the field independent of the value stored in the field.
Believe there was a thread about this within the last couple of months.
Also, in RPG, you have to compile your programs to be null aware.  It's not
the default.
