You are right to question the original statement.  As far as the date data
type goes, 0001-01-01 does not indicate the absense of a date, since that is
a quite valid date.

If it is null capable, it could be NULL and also contain 0001-01-01 (or any
other valid date.  Whether nulls are used or some arbitrary definition like
"0001-01-01 equals no entry", you still have to test it.
