Bob,

>Is there a free or very cheap program

There are three main contenders for this, and you could use any of
them free across the holiday period.

IBM has a package which includes CODE/400, which stands for
COoperative Development Environment. At one point in time I was told
this was available free for student use, but I'm not positive this is
still the case. This is, however, a free trial period so you could
use it across the holidays in any event. Start here:
http://www-4.ibm.com/software/ad/varpg/

Another vendor with a very powerful editor is Aldon, which sells an
editor called Flex/Edit. You can get a 30-day trial from
http://www.aldon.com/download.htm

A third possibility is an editor called CodeStudio. It is currently
free while it is in beta, and may be free for student use even after
that (don't quote me on that). It is not near as powerful as the
other choices and is not (at least yet) near as sophisticated. But it
sure beats using Word or Wordpad or a generic text editor. Until the
last beta build it only supported RPG IV, but now claims to have
support for RPG III and DDS too. You can check it out at
http://www.rpgiv.com/codestudio/index.html

I have used Flex/Edit for years, and highly recommend it. But
anything beats Word for editing programs!
