Phil,

If last name is a separate field, in most cases I would use a soundex
algorithm. It converts names to a shortened representation based on
the sound of the name. You store the shortened representation in the
file and convert a search value entered to the shortened representation.
You then use those values to perform the search/position. It cuts through
a lot of easily misspelled names. You should be able to find more
information about this on the web. I also have an RPG sub-procedure
that returns a soundex representation for a value.

Hello,
My Next assignment requires a generic search for customer's Last Name.

Would I use *HIVAL and *LOVAL, and it so, how do I incorporate it?

I have learned much from all of you in this form, and your help would be
greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Phil
