Hi Phil,

I don't see where *HIVAL would help you with this. *LOVAL might be
useful if you're doing your search in a physical file, and need to
search every record in the file...

A few questions that you need to answer:
-- Are you searching the subfile, or searching a physical file and
then loading the results into a subfile?
-- If you're searching a file, is the file keyed by the field
         that you're searching in?
-- Are you searching for a substring, or the whole field? In other
words, if your search key is "WILL" should it find just the
last name of "WILL" or should it also find WILLS, WILLIAMS,
         WILLIAMSON, etc?

If you're able to search a PF by key, you'll want to do so with SETLL
and READE (or READ) by the key that you're searching for.

If you're searching for a substring in a field, you'll want to use
the SCAN op-code to search each field. If you're searching the
subfile itself, you'll probably CHAIN with the RRN in a loop to load
each record... If you're searching the PF, you'll want to *LOVAL
SETLL, then READ each record, and scan that...

The same logic applies when the whole field must match verbatim,
except that you simply compare the fields with IFEQ instead of
using SCAN.

Hope that helps...
